Home to every sovereign from the 12th to 19th cent., the château is without doubt one of the richest royal and imperial residences in the world and the best furnished château in France, tucked away in 130 ha of parkland. 
A 15th century castle, Pierrefonds belonged to the Orléans family. It was dismantled in 1617 by order of Richelieu, and rebuilt by the architect Viollet le Duc at Napoléon III’s request.
