Presentation
The Rodin museum houses the works and collections of Auguste Rodin. It is situated in an 18th century private mansion, with its surrounding grounds, a veritable sculpture garden.
Since the early 20th century, Rodin had expressed the desire to create a museum devoted to his works at the Biron mansion. It was not until 1916, after three successive donations, that Rodin finally bequeathed to the State all his collections, personal archives, his property at Meudon and, in particular, his entire body of work, sculptures and drawings, together with the reproduction rights. The museum opened its doors to the public on 4th August 1919, two years after Rodin's death.
Visitors today can expect to discover works in marble, bronze, plaster, wax, terracotta, ceramic, paintings, drawings and the works of other artists (Monet, Renoir, van Gogh) belonging to his personal collection.
At Rodin's request, one of the museum's rooms is devoted entirely to the work of Camille Claudel.
The chapel was renovated in 2005 to create a venue for temporary exhibitions.
The gardens of the Biron mansion offer the visitor a pleasantly leafy walk in the very heart of Paris.
